Remade for your Disappointment

Remakes have become increasingly popular in cinema and television, leaving many a person to scream out "Can't Hollywood come up with something original?"

I've heard of many insane remake ideas. I heard one rumor that they were remaking Red Sonja, a 1985 adaptation of a Marvel heroine from the Conan the Barbarian series. This, I could probably get behind*, considering from what I've seen of the original, it's an enjoyable film that flopped well behind it $15 million budget, making only over $6 million. By "enjoyable", I mean it had me laughing a lot, even though it's not a comedy.

I've once heard a rumor of a Rocky Horror Picture Show remake, which I, cannot get behind. The 1998 remake of Psycho is despised. And just recently, I think I boiled in anger over a rumor about a Beetlejuice remake.

In case you didn't know, Beetlejuice is a 1988 film about a couple who die and become ghosts, and find their once peaceful home to be taken over by an annoying couple from New York, and their angsty teenage daughter, who is the only one that can see them. To get rid of the new irritable human inhabitants, the ghost couple enlist the help of "bio-exorcist" Betelgeuse. Dark humor and macabre hijinks ensue. This film is one I remember watching for a long time, and I even remember watching the animated series when I was even younger**.

The reason why I was angered when I heard this rumor (which might not even be true, so maybe I'm jumping the gun) isn't because I thought a remake would piss on the original, defecate its remains, etc. I just think a remake is unnecessary.

I don't think remakes themselves are unnecessary. I think a remake should only be done if the original film in question has not aged well, even considered laughable by today's standards. When I've seen side-by-side comparisons of the 1930's King Kong and the early 2000s King Kong, the way the women were written, and the acting in the 30s just seemed so funny to me. Granted, 30s King Kong has way more going for it than 2000s, but I think other people could discuss this better than me.

Films like Rocky Horror and Beetlejuice however? They've aged well, not even considering the fact that they're films from the 70s, and 80s (because Singing in the Rain doesn't need a remake, and that was made in the 50s.) Rocky Horror is supposed to make the viewer laugh out loud, and hell, the film is still shown in theaters, and people dress up in costume to go see it! Beetlejuice's effects are meant to be subpar, since director Tim Burton wanted the effects to mimic B-movies that he grew up on, stating "I wanted them to look cheap and purposely fake-looking."

I could go on all day about the stomachable remakes, and the ones that have made me upset, but I have better things to do. Like...well, I'll think of something.

* Yes, that is where the thumbnail for this post comes from. I think I might retract my statement if that is what the film is going to be like. I'll take unintentionally funny over vomit-enducing any day.
**It's better if you don't ask.

Ramblings of Fame

What all started this? I don't know. But let's begin a process of entering my mind.

I got a comment on a two-year-old blog today, telling ME I was a homophobe for not liking Jeffree Star. (I don't like Carlos Mencia either, does that make me racist?)

As I was scrolling through the recent comments, I noticed a recurring theme: That I was jealous of Jeffree Star. Why? Because he's famous.

I could spend an entire blog talking about how net famous isn't really famous at all. As much as I love Doug walker of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.Com, I wouldn't call him famous. Maybe I'd call him popular, but I wouldn't call him famous.

Instead, I should focus on the underlying issue here: I don't want to be famous. I don't even want to be popular. I want to be me.

If I wanted to be famous, I'd be going to acting auditions, I'd be taking voice lessons, not spending my time making stupid jokes with my friends.

As Gilderoy Lockhart* once said, "Fame is a fickle friend."
There are bands that were really popular a couple years ago that I never hear about anymore. What about the Jonas Brothers? A couple years ago, they were everywhere, with their own show, their own special issues of teeniebopper magazines, tons of endorsement deals, etc. Now? Kevin's married, Joe's trying to be an actor and solo artist, Nick is a solo artist. Their show is cancelled, and all their endorsement deals have gone to Justin Bieber.

I think it should be worth bringing up what career I want to go in. It's true, I want to do music. Not as a singer, or a musician, or a producer, but as a composer. That's right. A composer and lyricist for movies, and stage musicals. What exact fame could I be seeking there? Hm?

I guess maybe because I have a Buzzmaker and OG Badge, it should be assumed I want attention. I was once often asked how you get a Buzzmaker badge.

Well, let me tell you why I blogged on Buzznet:
It all started because i had a crush on Patrick Stump. I joined Buzznet because they had a lot of pictures here. As time went on, and my crush faded, I began to talk with more people. I realized I liked making funny comments, writing blogs, and talking to the cool people on here. So I did more of it.

Really. I wrote stuff on here because I liked doing it. Not because I thought I could get attention.

I'll be honest, as time went on, my blogs became crappier, and more forced. So, I stopped.

So, when someone tells me I should be jealous of someone because they're famous, I say "Wrong. Next try." Or I tell them to go play with their legos.

What can you say about a film starring Vanessa Hudgens, co-starring Mary-Kate Olsen, a modern adaptation of a fairy-tale, features a hot guy who turns hideous on the outside, and also can boast Neil Patrick Harris as a cast member? Well, let's take a look:

Beastly is an adaptation of a young adult novel adaptation of the classic fairy-tale, Beauty and the Beast.

This film definetely shows a different take from Vanessa's High School Musical days. She plays the daughter of a drug addict in major trouble, who makes a deal with Beastly Kyle to let his daughter live with him for protection. And she's working with Neil Patrick Harris!

However, I'm not a big fan of Mary-Kate's spell-casting here. She seems way too trance-like. Now, before anyone says anything, I'm certainly not implying that the star of the film Billboard Dad isn't anything but a phenomenal actress. I just do not like her cursing.

Some of it did actually seem quite realistic, like how he checks the standard social netowrking site and notices no one in school misses him. However, I was not really digging the "Why am I here?" "Because you need to be protected!" part.

However, we definetely shouldn't compare Beastly to that other movie, Beauty and the Beast. I mean, we all know Neil Patrick Harris won't burst into "Be Our Guest". At least, not here.

Any thoughts on Beastly? Gotta see it? Maybe download it? Or just pass on this one? Share!

Chris Brown recently said in a radio interview that Tiger Woods, like him, both deserve a second chance.

Now, before I start bitching, let's take a look at what both these two men did:

Tiger Woods: Cheated on wife with supposed 15 other women. Claims it was sex addiction, and has gone to rehab for it. Issued a public apology and genuinely asked for his wife and children to be left alone.

Chris Brown: Beat girlfriend Rihanna. Served community service. Chastised Rihanna for speaking out about the incident to Dateline. Bitched about stores refusing to carry his latest CD.

What Tiger Woods did was bad. Very bad. However, cheating can really only cause emotional damage and sexual insecurities to the other partner. With abusing your partner, they can be physically and emotionally scarred.

Chris Brown, you can absolutely not compare your situation to Tiger Woods'. They're absolutely nothing alike. The only similarity I see between you two are that you're both black men who have suffered a major public scandal. It's just as good of a similarity as Elton John and Christian Bale, who are both English men who can be total divas to work with.

In fact, Chris Brown, I still don't think you know exactly what you did. So let me tell you:
You beat your girlfriend, Rihanna, a woman who trusted and loved you. Do you not comprehend this?

Second, because I'm probably going to get hate mail for people saying I need to get over it, let me go on here about Chris Brown wanting us to forgive him:

Quit talking about it. If you really wanted us to forget it, you'd let us forget it. If you want a second chance, quit talking about it. Quit trying to make your situation relevant again. Just stop talking about it!

Really, this whole "I just want to be forgiven" act is not working. If you keep whining that we're not forgiving you, we're not going to forgive you. And comparing your situation to other's that are much less worse than yours is not helping either.

My overall point is, Chris Brown

STOP TALKING ABOUT IT!

This tweet I came across was just so hilariously bad, I couldn't help but share it.

Here we have a true tweet-masterpiece:

"Dear stupid lil bitch...every1 knows that ur a stupid lil bitch now...ive retweeted the evidence that ur stupid! fyl"

First off, you didn't retweet anything. You posted a tweet. Retweet is when you borrow another person's tweet.

Second, WHO? You can't say "every1 knows that ur a stupid lil bitch now" when no one has no clue who you're talking about.

Third, isn't this a little repetitive?

You know what? I think this needs to be a lyric in the next Girl 1 and Girl 2 song.

2009 was a good year in film. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came out after a near 6-month delay. Disney returned to 2-D animation with The Princess and the Frog. A comedy called The Hangover was an unexpected success.

As we close another year in cinema, we now look ahead to 2010's upcoming features. Here are a few flicks that are highly anticipated by the masses, plus movies I really want to see. But, here's a spoiler: It's not a countdown list.

First up, is the guy in a suit.:

Yep, Iron Man 2.

Summary from apple.com:

"The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is the armored superhero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces."

You excited? Can you wait until May 7?

Next is a movie I just really want to see. Why? Tina Fey and Steve Carell. The end.

I'm a total Tina Fey fangirl. I admit.

Basically, Carell and Fey are a suburban couple who go out on a date, and take another couple's reservation. Apparently the couple they took the reservation from are criminals, played by James Franco and Mila Kunis! I do love Mila. Taraji P. Henson plays a cop and the couple hire Leighton Meester as their babysitter. Wait, Leighton Meester?

Expect it: April 9

We don't have a picture available for this one, but we all know it will be anticipated. The A-Team.

My biggest question is who will play Mr. T? Mixed martial artists Quinton Jackson will play Sgt. B.A. Baracus, the role originally occupied by Mr. T.

Not so much as anticipation, but more of a WTF? movie, we have Get Him to The Greek, the sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, starring Jonah Hill as an intern for a record company, Russell Brand reprising his role as Aldous Snow, a rockstar, with cameos by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Katy Perry, Dee Snider, Meredith Vierra and Tom Felton.

Wait. Tom Felton? As in Draco Malfoy Tom Felton? WTF? I mean, how did that even happen? Seriously, HOW?

Let's go back to sanity and talk about Toy Story 3.

As Andy heads off to college, our good pals are sent to a day-care center. It stars the good old toys, Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz, and many other of your favorites, like Rex, Slinky, Bo Peep, and the new member, Joan Cusack as Jessie. Even though it has been a long wait for a sequel (try 11 years), but we can't wait!

And how can I forget this one? Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton:

19-year-old Alice returns to Wonderland, even though she doesn't remember it. She was harkened by the White Rabbit to save Wonderland from the Red Queen. I would say this is living proof that Tim Burton does acid, but the original book was a hell of a lot more screwy.

Expect it March 5.

Well, I guess I have to include this one:

The Twilight Series*: Eclipse comes out June 30, 2010.

Whoopee.

Also, to Ashley Greene, who said that it will be a "guy's movie": Fuck you.

Well, on the bright side, we can go see this movie instead:

It's the film version of the Nickelodeon cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Yeah, I needed to check the spelling twice.

It is set in a world where all four elements are controlled by people known as "benders" (and no, not Benders) and there is only one person each generation who can control all four elements. He is called...the Avatar. Enter Aang, who's tribe of airbenders, have been wiped out by the Firebenders, who now have control over the entire world. He is...the Avatar.

On July 9th comes another comedy starring Russell Brand and Steve Carrell, called Despicable Me, which is about world's #2 supervillain, Gru, trying to thwart his archenemy, Supervillain #1, Vector, played by Jason Segel. It also features Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Miranda Cosgrove, Julie Andrews AND Russell Brand. Does anyone see something weird here?

On the 16th comes Inception, a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, directed by Christopher Nolan (the guy who did The Dark Knight), Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page. I can't really explain what the film's about, so you can go watch the trailer here.

Lets' skip ahead to November 12, where Disney will release its 50th animated movie, Rapunzel, which, will be in CGI, and stars Mandy Moore.

November 16...HARRY POTTER!

HARRY POTTER!

Okay, so this one is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. But really, we could just settle for HARRY POTTER!

And then there's Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which has switched companies and will be distributed by 20th Century Fox instead of Disney (oh, now this means no one in the cast can get into Disneyland for free anymore!) but it will have Ben Barnes!

And, really, in my opinion, that's it for films in 2010. At least movies that I/the majority of Buzznet wants to see.

Here's to a cushy theater seat and buttery popcorn for you in 2010!

*I refuse to call it a saga. You need to work for the title "Saga". It's like the title "Diva". You can't just reach a couple high notes, whether or not they sound well, wear sparkles and call yourself a "Diva". There is much more to diva then just being able to get a noise out of a certain note and wearing a dress with sequins to a couple awards shows. Wait, what was I ranting about?
